Where Does The Power To Wait and The Spirit of Challenge Come From?
2 Samuel 5
In Genesis 6, God commanded Noah to bring all kinds of animals and birds to his ark. How can man catch all those animals and birds? Noah did not catch them, but God sent them. “They will come to you.” This is the principle of life. Life should be simple. If we serve God and rely on Him alone thoroughly, God will send us what we need. “They will come to you.”
This sample is David. From his youth, he relied on God and served Him only. To become king, he did not fight against Saul, Ish-Bosheth and Abner. Though he had a few chances to kill Saul, he did not touch him. Though his kingdom was more powerful than the kingdom of Ish-Bosheth, he did not use military force to annex Ish-Bosheth’s kingdom. After being anointed as king, he waited for God for 13 years. Then the world came to him.
Verse 1 says, “All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron.” When David waited for God’s time and way, finally they came to accept and anoint him as king over the entire house of Israel. I pray that the world may come to you. Hold on to one thing. Love your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
The fact that David waited means that he had faith in God. Faith is ‘emunah’ in Hebrew which means to endure or withstand. Faith is to wait trusting in God. When you have faith, you can wait though nothing seems to happen in your career, marriage or family. If you don’t have faith, you would become impatient that you would rely on your own plans and strength and even worldly tactics.
But David waited as he looked only to God with worship and prayer. Then the 11 tribes came to him. David became the king of Israel not through blood shedding or wheel and deal or manipulation but by waiting for God’s time and method. He knew the will of God and he wanted to unite Israel by God’s way.
Why do we mess up things in work, marriage and home? Because we don’t wait but rely on our own strength and plans. Faith is to acknowledge God’s way; His time and method.
Everyone has their own desires. “Lord, please bless me this way.” However, there is a way that God blesses and uses each of us. Among the twelve disciples of Jesus, James was martyred when he was young. John lived to the age of 90. Faith is to acknowledge the way God works for each of us.
Therefore, don’t be impatient. You are to wait, endure and persevere. When David waited, acknowledging God’s time and method, the world came to him though he had not done much to unite Israel.
At the first lecture for freshmen in a university, the dean of business department said, “You came here to make money, aren’t you? Listen, if you chase money, money will run away. On the other hand, if you avoid money, money will come to you. Therefore, never live a life of chasing money. Rather, live a purpose and mission driven life. Then, money and people will come to you.” This lecture applies to all aspects of life. Though you aim at something and try to catch it, it does not mean that you can catch it. You are to let it come to you. Just follow God and serve His will only. Then career, job, money, spouse will come to you.
God is immortal, omnipotent, holy, righteous and perfect. So, God is God Absolute. If you please and impress God Absolute, then relativistic things such as relationships with people, job and money are not that difficult to attain and control. However, there are people who wholeheartedly chase and try to catch such relativistic things. In the course of trying to please people and make more money, they make mistakes or commit sins fall into the sea of vanity and wound.
An old man lived his whole life dreaming of catching a huge fish. After 84 days in the sea, he finally caught a 5.5 meter long, 700 kg large fish through 3 days of fierce struggle. He was so happy. However, on his way home, his fish and his dream was attacked by bloody sharks. When he reached the shore after going through all kinds of hardships, only the bones of his dream large fish were left.
Bud David did not live like that. He did not pursue a throne. He did not purse human glory and power. He looked to God Absolute. He served God faithfully through worship and prayer. Then all, the tribes, throne, glory and fame came to him.
How do we know whether someone looks to God or not? Take away what he has or give him more.
Generally we rely on money and love it. Some say, “No, not me.” But when his income decreases and his bank account balance decreases he becomes depressed. He does not come to church but only thinks about how to make money. For that person, money is the center of his life, attachment and goal.
How do we know that David's heart was in God? Out of jealousy and murderous intention of King Saul, David became a fugitive. His popularity and seemingly bright future disappeared. He lived in the cave of Adullam with 600 losers of society. While David was away from the cave with his men, the Amalekites invaded there and took all the wives and children as captives. Then, David’s men who seemed to be close and loyal to him, put all the blame on David, and talked to stone him to death. This is unbelievable. This is nonsense. They were helped and served by David wholeheartedly. But when a crisis came to them, they talked to stone their leader to death. If David relied on people, he should have fallen or become crazy mentally at that moment.
However, David did not fall. 1 Samuel 30:6 says, “David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; But David found strength in the LORD his God.” In that discouraging and desperate moment, David looked to his God and relied on him. Then he gained strength. We see that the center of his heart is God.
The time of need, failure, broken relationship, poverty or uncertainty is not necessarily bad. When you are in such situations, you can examine where your heart or hope is. When your grades are bad, when your bank account decreases, when you are sick, when your relationship with other has some problems or when you are betrayed, that is a good time for you to put your heart in God and re-establish your life hope and purpose.
Faith is a battle of keeping one’s heart toward God and his eternal purpose. If you only look to God and wait through worship and prayer, they will come to you. I pray that you may win this battle and become like David.
Now, let’s hear what they tell David. “Behold, we are your own flesh and blood. In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’” What they said seems spiritual but in fact it is flattery.
What they first mentioned is “We are family.” This is about relationship. Second is, “You are an able man,” meaning, “You have capability.” Third, “God made you the shepherd and ruler,” meaning “your becoming king is God’s will.”
Their perspective has a wrong order; human relationship-man’s capability-God’s will. No, God’s will should be the first. However, they changed this order. They were pragmatic and human-centered. As they admitted, they had already known that God’s will was for David to become the king of united Israel. Then, shouldn’t they have followed David? But they followed Saul because they could enjoy security and pleasures under Saul’s human-centered leadership. When David was on the run for 13 years, they never supported or cared for him. They always wanted to live comfortably on Saul’s side. But now, when Saul, Ish-Bosheth and General Abner all died, they had no one left to rely on. Then they came to David and said, “Behold! You are our king. We will follow you!” They are opportunists.
But in fact, aren’t we like them? We know, “Jesus is our king.” But, do we follow Jesus? Do we honor Him as our King? Do you obey His will and command? Not a few chase the sweet things of the world neglecting their spiritual life. But, when they run out of money or when they are sick or when they have problems in their family, they come to Jesus saying, “Jesus, you are my king!” Today, we need to examine ourselves. Are we like the tribes of Israel? Are we opportunistic? Or are we faithful to God and serve Him?
David was not impressed or happy by their flattery. He did not rely on them. In fact, in the future when Absalom rebelled against David, they all again left and betrayed King David. Therefore, don’t rely on people. Don’t be attached to them. Instead, look at them as the objects of love and compassion. Guide them to God. And look only to God. Then you will be free from both people’s ill treatment and applause.
What did David do when they came to hm? Verse 3 says, “The king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD.” At Hebron, the place of fellowship (with God through worship), David made them become the covenant people. David helped them to make a covenant before the Lord. Here ‘covenant’ is ‘berithe’ in Hebrew, meaning to cut in half a bird or an animal. “If you break the covenant, you will be split in half like this animal.” This is the way of the ancient covenant. “You have been on the side of Saul, Ish-Bosheth and Abner, and now you have come to me. However, you may betray me and leave me at any time. Today, you are making me your king. Now, stand on the side of God. Serve the Lord throughout your whole life. Can you do that?” Why was David a great leader? When everyone else sought their own benefit, he alone stood on the side of God. I think that when God saw him, he would say, “Oh, I did well to choose David as my servant.” That is why the Bible says that David was a man after God’s own heart.
Verse 4, 5 says that David was 30 when he became the king of Judah and he became the king of the entire Israel when he was 37. It seems like David waited too long to become king. But he was 30 when he became the king of Judah and he was 37 when he was the king of Israel. Is it too slow? The path of faith is actually fast to achieve what you desire. Look to God for your job, career and marriage and live by faith. God will give you the best at the fastest time. Don’t be impatient or anxious. I pray that our church brothers may enjoy God’s blessings through waiting and walking on the path of faith.
Second, challenge the impossible.
Look at verse 6. “The king and his men marched to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites.” After becoming king of Israel, did David have a 30 days’ party? No, he challenged the impossible. David’s attacking was a big risky adventure because the Jebus was an impregnable fortress. It was not conquered even during the time of Joshua and the era of the Judges. If David loses the first war, it can be a big blow to his leadership. However, David looked to God and challenged the impossible. And he conquered the land of Jebus, and made Jerusalem the city of God and the capital of Israel.
In time of success, it is easy to be complacent. But when God gives you success, be adventurous and challenge impossible. Try something that few have done.
Everyone is busy with study and preparing career. Some enjoy girls or boys or parties or travelling here and there. That is what everyone can do. Then what if you do both preparing for your career and worshiping God wholeheartedly and dedicating yourself to the work of God? In this pragmatic and pleasure and money seeking generation, that would be impossible task.
But like King David, if you challenge the impossible as you sacrifice and become a ransom for the glory of God and for this campus, victory will come to you and many will find the grace of God. You come and worship God here on campus SFU and pray even during this spring break. You keep your body pure in this adulterous generation. You devote your time and material to the work of God. This is your sacrifice and altar building toward God and God will give you great victory. Don’t try to live an easy or comfortable life. David lived a life of challenge and adventure for the glory of God and for his nation, rather than enjoying pleasures and power of the world.
Look at verse 10. “And he became more and more powerful, because the LORD God Almighty was with him.” God was with David. This is the secret of man’s victory and prosperity. Do you want a victorious and prosperous life? It is when God is with you. Do you feel that God is with you? Do you feel God’s presence in your life? Do you feel that Christ Jesus dwells in you? If not, you need to be very serious. Don’t try to move. Instead, kneel down and pray to the Lord God to bless you to feel His holy presence. Otherwise, life is utterly meaningless and absolutely helpless. Seek God and rely on Him like David. God will be with you.
David lived in hostility and uncertainty for 13 years. Wherever he went, people cursed him, attacked him, mocked him and betrayed him. Yet he was so clean, right and correct in thoughts and behaviors. Is there anger, greed, hatred or revengeful spirit in him? None. It is because God is with him that his soul is healthy. What is important is that your soul is healthy. If God is with you and you are with God, your soul will not get sick. I pray that you may live a life of faith that looks only to God and rely on Him.
2 Samuel 5
In Genesis 6, God commanded Noah to bring all kinds of animals and birds to his ark. How can man catch all those animals and birds? Noah did not catch them, but God sent them. “They will come to you.” This is the principle of life. Life should be simple.
