“In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Walk.”
Acts 3:1-10
Look at verse 1. “One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon.” Peter and John understood that (united) prayer was the key source of power. "Do you know why life is so hard?" It is because we do not realize where the source of power is. Power is not in you and me. Nothing good dwells in us. The disciples knew that power is in Jesus. So, they prayed to Him. The evidence of this was their setting times for prayer: 9:00 AM, noon and 3:00 PM.
Daniel lived a powerful and fruitful life as a prime minister for seventy years, during such turbulent times of four changing dynasties. No matter how turbulently the world changes, we can thrive if we live like Daniel. Daniel 6:17 says that the king decreed forbidding prayer: "If you pray, you die!" Yet, Daniel as usual knelt and prayed three times a day to God. Did he die? No! he thrived more and even saw the end of history and heaven’s glory. If we, like Daniel, set aside three specific times a day for prayer, tremendous power will be unleashed to us.
Muslims pray at five appointed times each day with a firm conviction. If followers of a false faith pray with such dedication, what might happen if we—who have received the promise of eternal truth and life—committed to praying three times a day? If you fail in prayer, you fail in everything.
Those who abandon the place of prayer—there is no need to even look; things will not go well for them. You achieve success without prayer. Do not celebrate. You will soon find that your life is hollow.
Many people seem to work hard and diligently, yet they spend their lives pursuing the wrong things. Without prayer, you either wander aimlessly or live in powerlessness. Why? Because you have not received the Spirit of Jesus. Why? Because you do not care God’s will.
Here is a man shackled by an ill destiny. He was lame from birth (Verse 2). We take walking for granted, don't we? But just imagine suffering from back pain—life becomes not easy. Yet, this man had never walked from birth.
At first, he assumed everyone else was just like him. However, he was soon shocked when he saw others walking and playing soccer. "Huh? Why must I sit here? Why do I have to live like this?" Because of his crippling legs, his entire life became crippled, too. His job was begging. He likely thought, "This is my fate. Don't we also set limits on ourselves thinking, "This is my limit; this is my destiny?" fate.
I believe the lame represents you and me. We dress ourselves up well—wearing makeup and fine clothes, try to appear impressive on the outside. We wear masks to hide our true selves. Yet, deep down, we are ugly, filthy, ashamed, despairing and filled with a sense of emptiness.
He was begging in front of the temple—the very place where God dwells. Yet, despite sitting at the temple gate for forty years, he never entered the temple. He never experienced God. This is a life spent merely skimming the surface. Who is that man? He is you and me—living right in front of the temple yet filled with despair, resentment and complaints. But through Peter and John, "His life takes a dramatic turn.
First, see what the Holy Spirit focuses on.
Friends, you are not to see what you want to see. Instead, see what the Holy Spirit draws your attention to. Look at verse 4. “Peter looked straight at him, as did John.” They looked at the born lame closely and intently. Filled with the Holy Spirit through prayer, Peter focused on exactly what the Spirit wanted him to see.
Without the Holy Spirit, we simply see what our flesh desire wants to see. However, when we are filled with the Spirit, we can see what the Holy Spirit directs use to see. The Holy Spirit stirs our hearts to stay at some places and see something or somebody. This is sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.
Folks, pray. And engage in the ministry of God. Otherwise, you won't know what you are to see with your eyes. You miss worship service saying you are busy. You just have fun going here and there when you have time. Consequently, you fail to see what truly deserves your attention. You simply study, work, earn money, socialize, cry, laugh, despair, then one day finish your life. Don’t say that is life. Life given to you and me from God is way more value, mission and fruit than that kind of life. When you worship, pray and listen to the word of God, the Holy Spirit will reveal what you should focus on.
Peter and John saw the born lame intently. Probably, people just ignored him or showed sympathy by giving him coins. But Peter and John were different. Peter saw him intently with deep mercy and hope and took him to raise up in the name of Jesus. Then an explosion of revival began from this miserable man. You, too, must learn to stop where the Holy Spirit causes you to pause and stirs your heart. That is your mission. Pray, and you will not live your life in vain. Why? Because through prayer, you can focus on what the Holy Spirit wants you to see. That is where fruit and victory lie.
Second, believe that the name, Jesus heals and changes.
In verse 4, Peter said, “Look at us!” The born lame bagger must have been excited. Verse 5 says, “So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.” "Wow, they would give me something special. Would they give me $100? Or a check?"
Look at verse 6. Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have..." Can you guess the born lame bagger’s feeling? “What?" Are you looking down on me? Are you playing games with me?" He must have been disappointed and angry. Don't we do the same? We long for silver or gold such as a stable job, a high income, a nice car, a fine house, exciting travels, don’t we?. It all stems from our own desires and greed. Yet, if we are told, "You won’t get them,” we feel let down.
Everyone, what is the best and greatest thing for that born lame bagger? Is it really silver or gold? Isn't it rising up and walking? Isn't it a new life worthy of a human being? Isn't it subduing, conquering, ruling over all life circumstances, and bearing fruit? Yet, we don't even harbor such expectations. We focus only on silver or gold—money, pleasure, recognition and comfortable life. But God wants to give us things far greater and more amazing than what we expect.
People think that no help is provided for them if silver or gold aren't given to them. The world seeks and focuses on silver or gold. “Oh, look at that person—their car, their job, their clothes, their travelling package.” If you focus on silver or gold, you can never set free from mundane life, and you will never experience spiritual power.
“No, I can't marry because I have no silver and gold. I can't have children because I have no money.” Outwardly they are normal but inwardly they are crippled deeply. Would it really make a difference if the lame got plenty of silver or gold? Whether he had it or not, his physical condition would remain the same. Therefore, he needed something greater than silver or gold.
Look at verse 6. Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Peter gave him, the name, Jesus who has power to solve the root of his problem.
A name represents essence, character and power. The greatest treasure of the church and Christian is the name, Jesus—the only name that can save dead souls, release men from paralysis, shatter the power of the devil, and lift us out of despair, failure, disappointment and wounds. Acts 4:12 says, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Only the name, Jesus holds the power of salvation.
Let us apply this to ourselves. You have problems, too, don't you? What is that? Past failures and wounds? Poor academic performance? Problem of job finding or no chance of marriage? Illness, loneliness, or family crisis? We were not created to remain there. Would you spend all of your life to improve your human conditions or have more silver or gold? No. That is not solution.
What we need is the name, Jesus. When we put our faith in the name, Jesus, he enters us. Then we are liberated from what shackles us and paralysis. We gain new strength to walk and jump with heavenly vigor. This is the power of the name, Jesus. You must experience the power of the name, Jesus. Last week during Club’s Day, Joshua and Deion dedicated more than three hours to do the work of God. It was by the power of name, Jesus.
Second, obedience is crucial.
Peter commanded him, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk,” taking him by the right hand, he helped him up. Then he jumped to his feet and began to walk.” Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.
We see three changes. By the name, Jesus, he became moving, dynamic and passionate. Second, he right away went into temple of God with Peter and John. He could have gone to the world. But he did not abuse God’s grace. He immediately entered the temple to worship God. Third, he praised God. He was transformed to be a man of worship and praise. He restored God’s image and mission. That is a miracle.
Let the name, Jesus come into you. He will break the chains of failure, despair, bad habits, past pain and wounds and fear, enabling you to rise, walk, jump, praise, and live a life that impacts others.
There are times when God moves your hearts and gives strength to your feet through His word and His servants. At such moments, obey immediately and rise up. Some people act instantly when it comes to committing sin. Yet, when obedience is required, they say, “maybe next time." Worship, sharing reflections, Bible study, retreats, gospel work? “Next time, some other time.” Are you really going to live like that? Just keep living that way and see what happens.
At the command of Peter and his help, the born lame obeyed immediately, rising to walk. Faith is a matter of response. Some people believe in Jesus and see His power manifested thirty, sixty, or even a hundredfold. Yet some claim to be Christians, but they never change. Why? Because their obedience is too slow. Consequently, they fail to bear fruit for God’s glory and their happiness. Obedience means walking with Jesus seeking first God’s kingdom. That is where fruit, growth and joy are found.
Third, that is why we have to go.
It was not the paralyzed man who came; it was Peter who went to him. There are people who cannot come to church on their own. Some simply give up whenever they feel tired, busy, bad mood, or face difficulties. They are spiritually lame—unable to walk to worship God. That is why you are to go and give your hands to them. Peter took the man by the hand and lifted him up.
We believers are ‘goers.’ Look Peter. He wen to the man and took his hand and raised him up. You are not the one doing the healing, but a channel for Jesus’ power.
The devil makes us hesitate to do the work of God. He whispers, "Hey, you can go to church but just focus on yourself." Yet Peter went to the lame and gave him the name, Jesus. The power he exercised was Jesus’ power, but the hand that reached out was Peter’s—right? What do you do with your mouths and hands? Though we are weak, if Jesus’ power flows through our lips and hands, we will live extraordinary lives saving many souls from sin, curse and eternal judgment.
Fourth, the conclusion: becoming an evangelist.
Acts 4:14 says, “But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.” He stands beside Peter facing persecution. He met Jesus through Peter. He was healed. Then he was with God’s servants becoming a witness of Jesus. He grew. You will grow when you follow Jesus by standing with God’s servants and sharing Jesus with others.
How long have you believed in Jesus? Despite believing in him for a long time, are you living like a lame or begging like a beggar? Are you still asking for silver or gold, more money, better car and more comfortable life, more recognition? You taste Jesus’ grace and help. Then the conclusion is always to teach the bible and pray for souls. Live a life of the utmost value and importance—one that leads people's souls to the Kingdom of God.
Here is Malcolm Gladwell’s "Tipping Point"—where the slightest nudge triggers events beyond imagination. When does this happen? It happens when a "super-spreader" emerges. If a community has just ten people fully committed, that becomes the tipping point. That is when a mighty work unfolds. If a church has just ten people willing to stand alongside "Peter and John"—risking their lives in the course of witnessing to the name, Jesus, that is a tipping point sparking miracles and revival.
This man became the first tipping point in the early church after Pentecost. He was a born lame. He was a beggar. Yet, after rising up in the name of Jesus, he remained steadfast alongside the servants of God, Peter and John participating in the suffering of Jesus and, testifying to the name of Jesus; this changed the history of the church and sparked a great revival.
Healing is not all. After healing, going into the temple of God to worship Him, praising Him and living as a gospel worker is true salvation and meaning of life. When just one person rose up and became an evangelist, the world was shaken. In fact, the born lame begging for silver or gold are you and me. Now, in the name of Jesus, rise and walk. Then worship and do the work of God. Then unimaginable things will happen shaking this campus and city and the whole world. I hope that you, through faith in the name of Jesus, may become a tipping point.
