Your Young Men Will See Visions
Acts 2:14-21
On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to the disciples who had been praying. Then they began to preach the gospel in 15 different languages. People from all over the world were astonished and bewildered. Some made fun of them, saying “they were drunk.” From here, Peter delivers a sermon, clarifying this event.
“It is now 9:00 AM.” Jews never drink alcohol in the morning. Peter said, “No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel.” He quoted from the book Joel that prophesied the coming of the Holy Spirit.
They were not drunk on alcohol, but on the Holy Spirit. Everyone is drunken by something such as alcohol, women, money, travel, drugs or computer games. Being drunken by such things leads man to destruction. There are also those drunken by academics. It may appear noble. However, without Jesus and a mission, it is the same. Jesus' disciples were drunk by the Holy Spirit in the morning. Consequently, they powerfully shook the world.
Christians must be like missiles. These missiles must not explode in the church. Instead, they must explode in the world. When the disciples received the Holy Spirit in the morning, they were exploded not in church but in the world that they shook the world. There are people who worship only in the church and then go out into the world living as every Tom, Dick and Harry. "Is that person a Christian?" Do not live like that. You are to be filled with the Holy Spirit through the word of God and prayer and be exploded in the world with the gospel of Christ and a good life.
The Holy Spirit is power. In the seawall, there are 20-ton or 60-ton tetrapods to block the waves. But typhoons blow those things away. That is like the power of the Holy Spirit. Such enormous heavenly power came to the disciples that they shook the world. But why doesn't this happen to us? Because we do not pray and do not witness the Gospel. How difficult is it to live a life of faith without the Holy Spirit? Without the Holy Spirit, they have no strength to dedicate themselves to a God’s holy purpose and mission. However, when the Holy Spirit comes, even one person with heavenly overwhelming power, exerts a profound influence not only on their family but on their campus and even turns the world upside down.
Peter preaches that this event is the fulfillment of the Old Testament, specifically Joel chapter 2.
The theme of the Book of Joel is the Day of the Lord. It is the day the Messiah comes to the earth. At that time, God pours out the Holy Spirit upon people.
The end of age is from Jesus' birth to His Second coming. Therefore, now is the end of age. 2 Timothy 3 says that the last days are a time of suffering because people are deceived by the spirit of deception. If we live without the Holy Spirit, we are bound to be deceived. At the last days, people love money, pleasures and themselves. We think when we pursue and possess money, pleasure and self-love, we are happy. No, it is the opposite. We become enslaved by lust and greed.
Nowadays, in spite of hard-working or going out for fun and partying, many are living in a hollow life. Many suffer from depression, anxiety, insomnia and panic attack. This is the characteristic of the last days.
At the same time, this is an era in which the Holy Spirit is poured out on people in abundance. How can we overcome and triumph over this age of suffering? It is when we receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit.
Verse 17 says, “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.” Holy Spirit’s coming is not a drop or two. It is an overwhelming descent, like a torrential downpour from heavens. Then, we dwell in great conviction. This is different from self-confidence or positive mindset. Before an exam or a job interview, some repeat, "I can do it." This kind of confidence comes from within man. However, conviction is poured out from above. It is not that I decide to believe in Jesus and devote myself to the Lord’s work. Rather, it is believed by God’s grace and compels me to do the work of God. This is the filling of the Holy Spirit. I pray for you to be filled with the Holy Spirit and experience transformation. In Acts 2, we see Peter’s transformation in three ways.
First, Intellect.
The Holy Spirit works first in man’s intellect. First, the Holy Spirit governs Peter's thoughts. Peter became intelligent. He quoted Joel exactly 2 to interpret the current event.
The book of Joel written in B.C 800 prophesies the coming of the Holy Spirit and the end of age. Peter delivers a sermon that the current event is the fulfillment of the prophecy in Joel. People are astonished. “Oh, Isn’t he a fisherman? How is he such knowledgeable? He hasn’t studied theology.” Yet, Peter chose the precise text to interpret the present event and proclaims the fulfillment of God’s promise.
Pray for me to be filled with Holy Spirit so that I may correctly read the times, appropriately select biblical texts, and interpret this age correctly. When the Holy Spirit comes, He touches our intellect. When the Holy Spirit works in you, your understanding and absorption of the word of God enormously improves. I pray that the Holy Spirit may touch your intellect.
Second, emotion.
Verse 14 says, “Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd:” Peter raised his voice. He was different from a prodigal prophet Jonah who passively and silently delivered the message of God. Peter’s preaching is filled with passion, fervor and pathos."
Someone said, “If a preacher never raises his voice even once during his sermon, I do not trust that preacher.” Why? How can there be no passion and fervor and pathos when delivering the word of the living God?
The devil blinds our senses. The devil prevents us from feeling God and spirituality. You must feel God and the Holy Spirit. Feeling takes time. Shouldn't we spend some time to appreciate the beauty of flowers or paintings? Speed is what makes feelings disappear. If you hurry, you cannot feel it. The slower a bicycle goes, the more the scenery and people come into view. You feel it the least on an airplane. You give up on feeling because of the speed. The Israelites arrived at the Red Sea on their way to the Promised Land. The Egyptian army was chasing them from behind. They were in a rush. They had to cross the Red Sea quickly. But God told them, “Stay still. Slow down!” Is there anyone who is in a hurry right now? “I have to finish this quickly… I have to solve this quickly…” Slow down. Faith is seeing what God is doing. Faith is feeling God and the Holy Spirit. Then something unexplained joy, hope and passion arise in you to praise God wholeheartedly with even tears of gratitude.
Third, willpower.
Verse 14 says, “Then Peter stood up with the Eleven. Right before Jesus’ arrest and cross, the twelve disciples argued among themselves, “Who is the greatest?” They fought for power. They could not have one spirit. But now, while Peter was delivering sermon, the other eleven stood up with Peter supporting Peter with one spirit. This is the beauty and power of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we become united to expand the kingdom of God on our campuses and the world.
Sometimes I ask, “Can we do it?” “Yes,” but the person doesn’t do it. “Can we go there?” “Yes,” but the person doesn’t go there. They lack determination or will to do it. On the other hand, in difficult situations, there are people who do it and go there. It is our will or determination that makes us do and go. It is because the Holy Spirit touches our will. But there are many who have useless willpower. “I will go to Hawaii no matter what.” Wou, it is really happening! Stop living with such a pathetic will; live by the will of the Holy Spirit instead.
When we receive the Holy Spirit, indeed we live an unimaginably amazing and exciting life in this end of age.
Look at verse 17. “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,” Early teenagers these days use coarse language too often. They swear in every sentence and do strange things. But when they receive the Holy Spirit, the word of God comes out of their mouths. The solution is not in education. The only way for children to change is through the Holy Spirit.
“Your young men will see visions.” These days, young people are having a tough time. Getting high grade is hard, the competition is fierce, the future is uncertain, there are many temptations, and when they see successful peers around them, they are consumed by jealousy, inferiority, and anger. Getting a job is difficult. Marriage is difficult. Buying a house is difficult. That is why this era is called the era of giving up, giving up on marriage, employment, owning a house and relationships. Young people are the ones who despair and give up the most at the very moment they are to be overflowing with strength and motivation. However, when the Holy Spirit comes, young men see visions.
Every era has challenges to solve. To young people, now is the time to see visions in Jesus Christ. There are many young people who say they have nothing to do right now. So, they just go out to have fun during the summer break, sleep more, and watch movies more. No! to young people there are many works to do right now. Young people must rebuild this nation. Workers are being called from all sides. God askes, “Who will go?” Isaiah volunteered. “Send me, Lord.” Then he saw the amazing vision of Messiah’s coming from heaven to earth and he wrote the book of Isaiah. How is this possible? Because he received the Holy Spirit.
Without the Holy Spirit, young men think about girls and money, cars and sports. But when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, they realize that God made them to do great things.
Young people, the fact that there are many problems in this age means you have tremendous works to do and solve many problems. Indeed, this is great opportunity and privilege for you to live a great life.
In 1950s-1960s, the Kennedy Peace Corps was founded. As American youth became passionate, 10,000 went overseas every year. It was a missionary group. They went to various countries and fulfilled the needs of those nations. Those young people changed the world and became the hope of those countries. How was this possible? Because the young people saw a vision. When you receive the Holy Spirit, you go to your campus and everywhere and explode like dynamite.
Your old men will dream dreams. As one ages, both body and mind become slow and weary, and motivation fades away. They try to move as little as possible, seeking comfort because their bodies simply won't cooperate. However, when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, they dream dreams. Moses dreamt a dream at 80 to liberate Israel from Egyptian slavery. He also dreamt a dream for his nation to become a kingdom of priests and a holy people. Caleb dreamt a dream at 85: “Give me the hill country of Hebron.” His dream was fulfilled in David, and the Kingdom of David began in that land. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we see visions and dream dreams and our dreams keep growing.
Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” So, we must have a dream for the future to live vigorously and happily. No matter what hardships and barriers come our way, if we consistently read the Bible and pray, the Holy Spirit will make us see visions and dream to conquer our circumstances and move forward.
World-renowned investor Warren Buffett said, “The reason someone can sit in the shade today is because someone planted a tree long ago.”
We enjoy the benefits of civilization today, such as electricity, automobiles and airplanes. It is because someone such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Wright brothers dreamt a dream about electricity or automobiles or airplane long ago. Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ dreamed a dream of saving man from sin, death, and judgment, bring the kingdom of God to this earth. Therefore, He taught the word of God, raised his disciples, died on the cross, and resurrected.
When the Holy Spirit comes into you, you will inevitably prophecy, see vision and dream dreams. When the Holy Spirit came to the 12 disciples, they saw vision and dreamt a dream to evangelize whole world with the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have a dream. “Your young men will come to you like the dew.” (Psalm 110:3) I have a vision to see young men live a godly life and teach the Bible and change this city and Canada. I have a dream to officiate more than 12 weddings.
Nelson Mandela imprisoned for 27 years. The white guards threw excrement at his prison saying, "Hey, you will die here like dung. You will never get out of here alive." Yet, he trusted in God and saw a vision and dreamt a dream. In his autobiography, he said: “I never considered the possibility that I would die in prison. I knew that someday, as a free man, I would feel the grass beneath my feet again and walk in the sunlight.” During those 27 years, with the help of Holy Spirit, he held onto the dream that “good things are yet to come.”
Here is a question. How can we receive the Holy Spirit. Last week, I studied Matthew 3 with several people. “Repent, the kingdom of God has come.” No other way to receive the Holy Spirit except repent ours sins and believe in Jesus. Students. Acts 2:38 says, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Verse 21 says, “And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’[
I hope you all receive the Holy Spirit and see a vision and dream dreams. May the Gospel of Christ be spread at SFU, UBC, BCIT, and Uvic in this new semester, and may God raise you to become disciples of Jesus.
