Who Touched Me?
Luke 8:40-56
A grass flower under scorching heat is not appealing and attractive. So, it is easily ignored. But one poet says,
“Look closely, And it is beautiful. Look long, And it is lovely. So are you.”
God created man and said, “very good!” Everyone has a unique character and beauty. But you need to look closely and long.
Today we see a woman who suffered from an abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) for twelve years. She must have been pale without any energy. Moreover, such illness was regarded unclean, the punishment from God because of her sin. She must have suffered from guilt and shame. Whatever and whoever she touches becomes unclean that she has to leave her family and society. She was thoroughly marginalized and alienated.
I would like to define her this way: ‘a woman who has never sat in the seat of the main character.’ She was like a grass flower in the desert. Nobody paid any attention to her.
Victor Hugo wrote a novel named Les Misérables. Who would pay attention to the story of a criminal? But Victor Hugo tells us a criminal’s story, who was he, why was he prisoned and how was he transformed to live a meaningful life. A criminal can become the main character and live a beautiful, influential and fruitful life. This is what Jesus is doing. On his way to Jairus’ house, he took time with her and treated her as if she were the only person in the world.
The woman suffered for 12 years with incurable bleeding disease. According to Mark, she visited many doctors, spending all her savings, yet she got worse.
Look at verse 44. “She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.” Mark 5:27-28 describes it more in detail. “When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, ‘If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.’” She had amazing faith. ‘One touch’ faith and she experienced healing and miracle.
Some experience salvation and transformation when they listen to sermon only once. Some come to church and listen to sermons numerously. But they remain in their old mentality and lifestyles. What is the difference?
Religiously and socially, she was prohibited from coming to Jesus. Her illness made her spend all her youth in suffering as a lonely and shameful social outcast. She was afraid of offending others with her offensive smell from her bleeding. Still, she came to Jesus as a matter of life and death with last remaining strength and tremendous determination. And by faith, she touched the cloak of Jesus and she was healed.
The story could have ended here. She would disappear quietly and Jesus would go to Jairus’ home. But Jesus stopped and looked around and said, “Who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter protested, “Lord, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” But Jesus said that his divine power went out.
Why did Jesus look for the woman? The woman’s strategy was ‘hit and run’ like a clever baseball player. However, Jesus was calling her because he knew what kind of woman she was. She needs to come out of her own shell and own small world. Though she was physically healed, she needed another healing for her mind and soul.
For the last 12 years, she had never been recognized. She had never had chance to share her life story-her loneliness, despair, shame, guilt, fear, poverty and desperate desire for beauty and healing.
She had never become the main character in her society. She had lived as an extra. No one was willing to listen to her. Not only her body but also her mind and soul had been sick. Now Jesus wanted to heal her mind and soul. How? By calling her and giving her chance to talk about her life story.
Here is a poem, ‘The Flower.’
Before I called her name, she was nothing more than a gesture. When I called her name, she came to me and became a flower. Like I called her name, will someone please call my name that suits my light and fragrance?
I believe that this was her soul-wrenching cry, “will someone please call my name?”
Now, Jesus wanted her to become like a beautiful flower and main character. How? By calling her and giving her an opportunity to tell her life story.
Look at verse 47. Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. The woman, sick, wounded and broken with deep sorrow and loneliness would have lots of story to tell. Women talk a lot. Her life story must have been long—until the death of Jairus's daughter. Jesus listens to her life story to the end. For the last 12 years, she was forced to be silent. But now she talked all in her heart and the healing grace of Jesus. She was revived.
Just before attempting suicide, a woman made a final phone call to a church pastor. It was 3 a.m. After the conversation, she decided to live not because of the pastor's wise counseling but because she was moved that he had listened to her story to the very end at that hour.
Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings to God. God asked him, "What shall I give you?" Solomon prayed, “Lord, give me a listening heart.” (1 Kings 3:9) God was pleased with him and said, "Since you have not asked for wealth or long life or the death of your enemies but a listening heart for your people, I will add to this all things."
Be a wise man with a listening heart. By listening to the woman’s life story, Jesus healed her loneliness and pain and made her a main figure before the public.
The definition of art is a work to reconstitute people and things in different ways. One of ways is ‘close up.’ Victor Hugo carefully looked into Jean Val Jean’s inner agony, passion and hope and wrote such a masterpiece. Jesus looked into the woman’s heart. Then her wounds, loneliness, isolation and despair and aspiration for healing and a new life all were seen. And Jesus let her speak out her life story and faith in the name of Jesus. This is healing and salvation.
Man is valuable, beautiful and noble. But we fail to know it. Only God knows man’s value and beauty. Therefore, you should go to Jesus and touch his cloak. He will restore value and beauty to you. And as the poet said, you need to look at the person closely and long.
In the cold Chicago winter, a blind homeless was begging with a sign that read, “I am blind. Please help me out.” Passersby didn’t even glance at him. A Frenchman (Entré Breton) saw the beggar and the sign long and closely. And he changed the sign. Then, an enormous pile of coins accumulated in front of him. It read, “Spring is coming soon. But I can’t see.” This phrase evokes two feelings in people. First, the new hope that spring is coming soon, though it is currently a cold winter. Second, “How pitiable he is, unable to see the beautiful spring!” Because people felt his pain, they sympathized with him that they gave him money.
Jesus saw her closely and long and knew how to heal her. By calling her to tell her life story and faith. Romans 10: 9 says, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Thank God for Jesus who came to the earth from heaven. He is a life saving Healer, Listener and Savior. I want you to come to Jesus. And I want you to tell your life story in front of many people. Those who do not want to tell their life stories in Jesus are nominal or cultural Christians.
Then Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” Jesus called her “Daughter.” Jesus blessed her to have a new relationship with God and her society.
Jesus also said, “...your faith has healed you.” Jesus did not say that his cloak had healed her, or that he had healed her, but that her faith had healed her.
Come to Jesus by faith. And touch his cloak by faith. And open your mouth to share your pain, wounds, hope, faith and the mercy of God. God will make you beautiful, influential and fruitful. God will make you a main character in this world.
Now, let’s see the father whose daughter was going to die. I can only imagine how terrified and overwhelmed he is feeling right now because of her dying daughter.
Here is Schopenhauer’s three principles for good writing. First, write it easy way. Second, Make the easy things (fun)interesting. Finally, make the interesting things profound. Then you will become the best writer. If what you say or your writing or life is easy, fun, and profound, you will succeed. Live such life. Through the healing of this woman, Jesus demonstrates the depth of life to Jairus.
This incident occurred on the road as Jesus was on his way to heal the synagogue ruler’s daughter. Jairus could not delay for even a moment because of his dying daughter. It was urgent. “Jesus must hurry, hurry and hurry.” However, a hindrance stood in the way. A woman suddenly appeared from nowhere. And she told her life story endlessly until news came, “Your daughter is dead. Do not bother Jesus anymore." He was devastated. Jairus should have been furious at the woman, “You wicked woman! My daughter died because of you.” And he could have complained to Jesus. “I was first. I asked for help first... Why did you delay and let my daughter die?” He fell into despair and fear. “Ah, everything was over.”
Now think. Why did Jesus delay? Why did Jesus let the woman speak such long? It was because Jesus wanted Jarius to have depth of life. “Mr. Jarius. Your daughter is precious needing mercy. How about this poor and suffering woman? She is also a daughter of God.” This is depth of life. Oh, that we may have such depth of life!
At the news of her death and people’s suggestion, he must have fell into fear and despair. He was going to give up. He was going to stop praying. This is a crisis. Impossible situation is not the crisis but losing faith and stop praying and stop coming to Jesus are real crisis.
People give up coming to Jesus and stop praying not because of impossible situation but because of lack of faith. They doubt in despair, “Is it possible? Can I live a meaningful and fruitful life?”
At that time, Jesus said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid, just believe. And she will be healed.” It means, “Do not see the situation. Do not hear others’ suggestion. Just believe. Believe continuously. Trust in me to the end. Depend on me wholeheartedly. Believe in me. I am the Lord of life and resurrection.”
At that impossible and hopeless situation, Jairus did not give up. He did not leave Jesus. He let Jesus come to his home where his daughter was dead. He ran the race of faith to the end. Then Jesus raised his dead daughter.
A sick woman and Jairus’ dead daughter, why are these stories connected? Are there any common points? Yes, the woman suffered for 12 years and the girl was 12 years old.
The number 12 is the number of church, representing all Christians. In a sense, you and I are like the woman who suffers from incurable disease and like the girl dying or dead. As both needed Jesus and both were healed and raised from the dead, we also need Jesus and He can heal us and raise us from the dead. Amen.
The woman came to Jesus secretly by herself and for herself. The girl’s father came to Jesus openly for her daughter. "Between the two, who are you more similar to?" Are you coming to Jesus for yourself or someone else? If you are like the woman, what is your long suffering sickness or life problem? If you are like Jairus, who is the one whom you really crying for? What or who is your dead or dying daughter? Is your hope like the daughter? Is your finance, health or future like the daughter? Is she dying or dead already?
Today, we hear from the Lord, Jesus. “Don’t be afraid, just believe.” I confess I have fear of losing my daughter. That daughter is my hope and desire for something. That daughter is someone whom I pray for. And that daughter is this world. This world is wasting away and people are being lost. There are endless wars and natural disasters. There are hatred, anger, revengeful spirit, murder, theft, immorality, selfishness, you name it. To me, this world seems to be dying. To me my daughter is going to die. And sometimes, I wonder, “Is she already dead? Then what am I doing? Is what I do waste of my life?”
Today, my prayer is, like the woman, let’s touch Jesus by faith. Let’s share our life story in Jesus with others. And let’s listen to Jesus’ voice, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe.”
When Jesus healed the woman, many other effects are followed.
Firstly, her body was healed. Secondly, her mind and soul were healed. Third, her relationship was restored. Fourth, she was used as an evangelist. She received a mission from God. Fifth, Jairus’ doubt and unbelief were healed. Finally, Jairus’ daughter was healed.
Life is like this and life should be like this. 1+1=2, this is kindergarten math. Then what is the answer of ‘1+1?’ Jesus says, it could be multiplied to 30, 60, 100 or even uncountable. Worldly (foolish) people see 1 as only 1. However, godly and spiritual people have different view and attitude. They are faithful to one and expect a lot of changes (harvest) from one for themselves and many others and the whole world. God bless you!
