“Lord, Just Say The Word”

Luke 7:1-10

Verse 9 says, “He was amazed at him.” And he said, “I have not found such great faith in Israel.” There are different levels of faith, great faith and little faith. Hebrews 11:38 says, “The world was not worthy of them.” The world is smaller than faith. The world can contain money, power, knowledge and pleasures, but it cannot contain faith. Faith is connected to God transcending the universe and reaching eternity. Let’s learn what ‘such great faith’ is.

First, love
Romans 10:17 says, “Faith comes from hearing the word about Christ Jesus.” The centurion heard of Jesus. He had never met Jesus in person. Still, he believed Jesus when he had just heard of him who healed the sick and talked about the kingdom of God. And he connected Jesus’ word to his practical problem believing that Jesus could heal his dying servant.
A woman shared a testimony about being healed of her illness in just three days after going on a short-term mission trip. A student got all A's when he attended Sunday worship service absolutely. A businessman testified that his sales increased tenfold after he offered a tithe to the Lord. Beautiful life stories. Then, are these just their stories?

Faith is to connect such hearings to ourselves. The centurion did. Centurions were Roman military officers in charge of 100 soldiers. They were trained and educated through military academy in Rome. They were elites of the society with wealth with social and political position.
Verse 2 says, “There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die.” This is very unusual and even shocking. At that time, a servant (slave) was treated like a living tool and at the disposal of his master. When a slave was sick and about to die, the normal approach would be to just dump him.
But this centurion did not follow the custom of the society. He valued his servant highly. He had a deep respect for human life. And there might be a hidden story to value him highly.

There was an Air Force Flight Captain named Anand. During World War II, he achieved outstanding merits by destroying enemy bases. One day, after being hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire and parachuting into enemy territory, he miraculously escaped. He was discharged and returned to his hometown. One day while he was having a meal at an restaurant, someone came and saluted him. Mr. Anand said, "May I ask who is speaking?" "I was a maintenance soldier who folded parachutes in your station. I was overjoyed and grateful to God to hear the news that you had safely escaped using the parachute I had folded.” Then Mr. Anand hugged him tightly, shedding tears and said, "Thank you so much!" Before, he considered himself a war hero. "There is no one who fought as bravely as I did, and where else would you find a hero like me who escaped by parachuting?" He had never thought that he would have died if someone hadn't folded the parachute properly. That day, he realized that his survival up to this point was not due to his own strength, but to the dedication and hard work of nameless people. When he acknowledged this, he felt grateful that he valued the retired soldier highly. And he began to value some around him highly.

The servant might be like the retired solider who folded the parachute for Mr. Anand. The centurion valued him highly. When the servant fell ill and was dying, he felt deep pain and sorrow as if his own son were sick and dying. To him, his servant looked so pitiful. Then a miracle happened.

A famous Korean singer married when he was 38 years old. The next year she gave birth to a son. Around 5 years after, the relationship between the couple deteriorated. They slept in separate rooms and didn't talk to each other for almost 2 months. She thought about divorce. It was a crisis. One day, she came home late after work and found her husband already in his room. When she stepped out of her room at dawn, she found her husband sleeping on the sofa. He looked so tired. At that moment, suddenly, he looked so pitiful. She remembered that he was so valuable to her as her husband. She shed tears and all the resentment in her heart vanished. Then amazingly, their relationship was fully restored. A heart of pity—this is love. This is God’s heart and the centurion had this heart moved Jesus.

Thankfully, God has given me a heart to view some young people valuably. So I pray for them, “Lord, please help them, heal them and bless them.” Wherever you go, in campus and work place, there is always someone like the sick servant seemingly less important or even useless or sick. Who is like that servant to you? If you have pity on them, pray for them and bring them to Jesus, that is great faith and a miracle will happen.

Third, consideration and generosity
They say that physics students could make a nuclear weapon. They say the theory is simple. However, you must conduct experiments first, and then deploy them in the field. Hearing the word of God is just knowledge or theory. You must test to prove the validity of the word of God by your obedience. In D. L Moody’s Bible there were many letters "T.P." standing for "Tried and Proven".

Some say, “I know the Bible.” Then, have you tried it? Have you obeyed?" The devil whispers to us. "Hey, study the Bible. But don't do the experiment. Some say, “Yes, I will do. I will come.” But they don’t do. However, the centurion was recognized for his actions, not his words.
Look at verse 4-5. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” This is amazing. While most Romans soldiers despised, harassed and squeezed the colonial people to gain benefit, he loved Israel and built a synagogue. This is consideration and generosity.
The synagogue is a place where Jews gather and listen to the word of God. The centurion built a synagogue for the people there to worship God, pray and do Bible study. He used his money to build a synagogue as a Bible house. I want you to live like the centurion of consideration and generosity in Jesus.

I heard P. John Wesley’s sermon saying, “I do not accept a person’s repentance unless his wallet repents.” I learned that true repentance must be accompanied by concrete action and financial restitution, rather than just verbal apologies.
I am thankful to the Lord that among students in our church, a few give an offering to God. I want you to grow to be men and women of consideration and generosity. This is great faith.

Fourth, self-finding as a sinner
When Jesus was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you under my roof.” His first emotional request, "Tell Jesus to come," was replaced by increasing conviction of his own complete unworthiness.
Outwardly, the centurion was politically and militarily highest figure with wealth in Capernaum. On the other hand, Jesus was a poor country preacher. But he saw Jesus and himself in spiritual eyes. Jesus came from heaven. He is the God Almighty. He realizes that Jesus is not the person whom he could ask to come and go.

And he, a Roman military officer called Jesus Lord, “Qurie.” To Roman soldiers like him, the lord, “Qurie (quirinius)’ was only one, the Roman Emperor. The centurion was not supposed to call anyone in Rome’s colony ‘Lord.’ Still, he called Jesus, Lord. He showed absolute respect to Jesus. He believes Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. This is his confession of faith. His self-finding as an unworthy sinner and deep respect for Jesus are indeed amazing. This is such great faith.

At that time, most Jewish people were so rude and arrogant to Jesus though they saw and heard his divine power and teachings. On the other hand, the centurion acknowledged Jesus’ holiness saying, “Lord, I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you.” This is amazing.

Some people come to church like they are going to a cinema or a stadium as audience. They come to church with Starbucks coffee and sip it or chew gums during the service. Some people usually or always are late for the service. Some people check text messages during service. This is abominable. “Lord, show us your mercy to restore deep adoration and holy fear to You.” If we confess like him, “Lord, I am sinful, I need your mercy and forgiveness,” the Lord will show us his grace and miracle.

Fourth, absolute faith in the word of Jesus
Verse 7b says, “But say the word, and my servant will be healed.” What he said was quite striking. He believed the absolute authority and power of the word of Jesus. He had never seen any miracles from Jesus with his own eyes. Still, when he heard about Jesus, he believed the absolute authority and power of Jesus’ word. His faith did not come from seeing Jesus. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:6 “We live not by sight but by faith.”
God created the heavens and earth by his word. Likewise, the centurion believed that his servant would be healed by Jesus’ word. This is amazing. This is such great faith. “Lord, just say the word, and my servant will be healed.” Indeed, his servant was healed by Jesus.

Ultimately, life is a matter of faith. Hebrews 11:6 says, "Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” You must believe. "Lord, my illness is too severe, please just say one word: ‘be healed.”
One student’s GPA is over 4.0. I thought he was full of confidence for his future. But he said he was full of anxiety and worry. I pray for him. “Lord, just say the word, and he will have peace.” I have been praying for Uche. “Lord, just say the word, and he will come to Vancouver to serve your purpose with a proper career.” I also pray to the Lord, “Lord, just say the word for them, and they will be healed.”

Now, everyone is struggling and busy. Still, you came to worship God today. May God bless you to have the centurion’s faith, “Lord, just say the word, my problem will be solved.”

How could he have such absolute faith? Look at verse 8. “For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”According to his testimony, his military life became the ground of his faith.

Military is a very unique society. When I joined the military, I had to cut my hair. I had to put off the civilian clothes and wear military uniform. The words, “well… I don’t know… maybe…I will think about that” are not permitted any more in military. Instead, all soldiers must speak, “Yes, sir! I will do it right away.” I was trained to follow army system that is ‘order and obedience.’ “Get up at six am and go to bed at 10 pm!” The time of watching TV is 2 hours each on Sat and Sun! No phone is allowed! No soldiers frown, “why?” Soldiers must obey their commander’s orders. If they do not obey, they would be imprisoned and even be shot to death in the time of war.

Based on his experience as a soldier, the centurion understood the principle of order and obedience. He knew how the army system operated. There are ranks in authority and according to the commands of the officers the army moves.

Amazingly, the centurion applied the principle of the physical army world to the spiritual world. Both in a physical and spiritual world are maintained by the order and obedience. Otherwise, it soon becomes a chaos. Order and obedience is the beauty and the core of the physical world and the spiritual world as well. This led him to the realization of Jesus’ authority. He believed that even sickness would obey Jesus’ command. Without learning obedience no one can experience the power of God’s word.

It seems that we do not like the word "submission" or ‘obedience’ because we have a fallen sinful nature. This is main problem. Many say that their tight schedules or uncertain job security or lack of financial stability or high living cost are problem. But the real problem is man’s stubbornness and disobedience toward the word of God. The blood of Adam is circulating in his descendants including you and me. So when we do not like the command or guidance or instruction, we say, “No” or “Maybe” or “Let me think about it.”

The Bible says that we are good soldiers of Christ (2 Timothy 2:3) needing ‘obedience training.’ In obedience training, three things are crucial, “Go, come and do.” God said to Abraham, “Go to the land I will show you.” So he left his country, his people and his father’s household. Once, Abraham became very depressed when he was old with no possibility to have a son. He was cooped up in his room. God said to him, “Come out of your room.” So he came out of his room. God said when he was 99 years old, “Get circumcised.” On that very day, he circumcised. God said, “Go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice your son as a burnt offering.” He obeyed. Then he experienced the grace and power of God.

When I was young, I learned from my pastor to obey the Lord in the three things, “Go, come and do.” I have encouraged a student to join Friday prayer meeting with testimony for 6 month. Finally he joined once. I pray for him to continue to join and have wonderful time with God.

Whether well educated or not and whether having gentle personality or not, without obedience training, man is just disorderly and useless before God. I pray for you to be trained to learn obedience. You will amaze Jesus and see spiritual power of God.

Jesus turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” His faith was based on the authority of Jesus’ word.

Verse 10 says, “Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.” May God bless us to learn the centurion’s faith in Jesus’ word.
