Ahab, Stop! Or, You Will Die

1 Kings 22

Ahab dies. Why? Because he rejected all the opportunities God had given him and, crucially, refused to listen to the word of truth. The key is to listen to the truthful word of God. Hearing only what I want to hear only reinforces my own will, pride and ego. “I'm fine. I'm great. I'm doing well. I was right.” Then, Ahab died.

Verse 3 says, “The king of Israel had said to his officials, “Don’t you know that Ramoth Gilead belongs to us and yet we are doing nothing to retake it from the king of Aram?” Ramoth Gilead was a strategically important location in northern Israel. Ahab, king of northern Israel, proposes to Jehoshaphat, king of southern Judah, “Will you go with me to fight against Ramoth Gilead?” Ahab believes that retaking the land is justifiable and reasonable. But he doesn’t pray.
Look at verse 5. But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “First seek the counsel of the LORD.” Jehoshaphat sought God's will first. He prayed first to God. His attitude is good. If you have a friend who suggests like Jehoshaphat, “Hey, let’s first worship God and pray to Him,” you are blessed. And if you make this suggestion to your friends, you are good shepherds.
Like Ahab, there are people who plan and act without prayer. On the other hand, there are those, like Jehoshaphat, who first ask what God's will is. Ask God first, listen to His will and act. This is faith.

Look at verse 6. So the king of Israel brought together the prophets—about four hundred men—and asked them, “Shall I go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?” “Go,” they answered, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.” Among the 400, no one opposes Ahab’s plan because they know what Ahab wants to hear. These false prophets only told Ahab what he wanted to hear. They are masters of flattery. They only feed him sweet things causing him to death.
A certain pastor confessed with tears, "I have only fed the congregation sweet words. I have not fed them bitter words."
Folks, if you only like to listen what you want to hear from the Bible or your friends, that is dangerous. You must listen to both sweet and bitter words. Cancer is spreading in your friend’s body. Would you tell him, “Don’t worry, you are fine?” Shouldn’t you tell him the truth, "You're in danger?"

If the word of God is heard to you only sweetly, I am probably one of the 400 and you are like Ahab. When Peter confessed, “Jesus, you are the Sone of God and Messiah,” Jesus blessed him, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” Then Peter was extremely happy. But when Jesus said about his upcoming suffering and death on the cross, Peter opposed Jesus strongly, “Lord, never!” Jesus rebuked him, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” We are to hear both sweet words and bitter words. We are to hear both the message of cross and and glory.

Jehoshaphat sensed something wrong in the prophecy of the 400 false prophets. He has a spiritual sensitivity. Look at verse 7. But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no longer a prophet of the LORD here whom we can inquire of?” Then, Micaiah appeared. Ahab said, “I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad.” “The king should not say such a thing,” Jehoshaphat replied. It is a blessing for a wicked man, Ahab to have such a godly friend like Jehoshaphat.
Here are 400 false prophets and one true prophet. False prophets only deliver what people want to hear, not God's will. If Micaiah delivered God’s will, “King Ahab, you will die if you go there,” he would be killed. Indeed, he was slapped in the face and imprisoned. Yet he delivered the truthful word of God to Ahab, "If you go there, you'll die!"
This age desperately needs prophets like Micaiah, who risk their lives to tell the truth. If you, Christians, don't talk about Jesus, repentance, holiness, heaven and hell, but only talk about how to make money, where to travel, or flirting with girls, this campus and world truly have no hope.

Look at verses 13-14. The messenger said to Micaiah. “Look, the other prophets without exception are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably.” But Micaiah said, “As surely as the LORD lives, I can tell him only what the LORD tells me.”

There are times when we are pressured at school, workplace or home to follow the main trend, “YOLO. Work hard, make money and enjoy your life.” If we silently or boldly belong to the majority taking an easy way, we will become fake.
Micaiah speaks the truth and reveals the spiritual reality. Look at 19-23. I saw the LORD sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing around him on his right and on his left. And the LORD said, ‘Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?’ Finally, a spirit came forward and said, ‘I will entice him.’ “‘By what means?’ the LORD asked. “‘I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said. “‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’ “So now the LORD has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you.”

Micaiah shows a heavenly council discussing over Ahab’s death. Micaiah knew it and warned Ahab, "Ahab, don't be deceived by lying spirit of 400 false prophets. Don't go. Or you will die." This is the last chance to Ahab to escape death and eternal judgment.

If Ahab denied his plan and pride thinking, “Though I hate that guy, I will listen to him and stop,” he would not die.
But Ahab snorted at Micaiah’s message. “A heavenly council? Are they discussing over my death? Am I being deceived by a lying spirit? No, I decide my own fate.” Is there anyone who thinks like Ahab? Don’t be deceived. Life came from God and goes back to him under His sovereignty. Ahab ignored the message of heaven because he did not want to give up his plan of going to take Ramoth Giliad.

Folks, remember. There are lying spirits. They only speak a word of compliment and comfort to you. "You will be fine. Everyone lives like that.” You don't worship, pray, obey, dedicate or deny yourself for Christ Jesus. Yet someone says, "God loves you. May God give you peace and bless you," would you smile saying, "Amen?" Jesus came to this earth to give us the kingdom of God. His first message was, “Repent!” But Ahab never repented and turned to God. And he died.

God's will was clearly conveyed through the prophet Micaiah: "Ahab, do not go to Ramos Gilead. If you go, you will die." Would you still go to take Ramos Gilead? Would you still go to satisfy your passion? Would you still go to reinforce your self-seeking ego and enjoy worldly pleasures? Would you still keep your plan set without prayer and God’s will? Shouldn’t you obey God’s will, seeking first Hiss kingdom and His righteousness?

Look at verse 29. “So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead.” Strange! The will of God was clearly delivered to them, "Do not go." Yet they went. We live like this, too. We know God's will clearly. "If you go there, if you live like that, you will die." But though we know it, we just go. Ahab died there. Jehoshaphat also almost died. We must learn from this.

First, obey though you don't agree.
Ahab set his plan. “I will go and take Ramoth Giliad.” Reluctantly, he prayed to God. Then he heard God's will through Micaiah, but he couldn't agree with it, “My plan is fine.” So he went to war.

A certain man dated with a woman. It was an unhealthy relationship. Still, he planned to marry. He heard from his pastor and a few spiritual friends, “the relationship is not God pleasing.” But he did not agree. He kept going like Ahab. His end was fatal.
You can set your plan. Then pray and listen to God’s will through Micaiah like prophet whether your plan is God-pleasing or not. If not, give it up. Don’t stubbornly insist your plan like Ahab. Then you will see God’s glory in your life. You will become deep and wide.

Second, don’t seek another value.
Jehoshaphat was a godly king. He prayed, “Lord, should I go or not?” God answered through Micaiah, “Don’t go.” Then why did he go? It is because there's a value that matters to him more than the the word of God.

You worship God. You listen to His word. That's good. But you have another value. That's alliance and friendship. Jehoshaphat highly valued alliance and friendship with Ahab. Look at verse 4. “I am as you are and my people as your people.” Northern Israel and Southern Judea had been enemies, but now they achieved alliance and peace. Jehoshaphat argued, “How can I break this friendship? If I do not go, Ahab will be upset and angry that the friendship and alliance would be broken.” So, he went to war ignoring God’s word.

Your friend wants you to go on a trip or hang around or study together. But that is the Sabbath day or there is a prayer meeting or a mission trip. “Gee, I can't lose my friends. It should be okay though I skip worship service and prayer meeting and mission trip.” That could kill you.

There is a wedding ceremony on the Sabbath day. "Today, my brother marries. My friend marries. How could I not go?" If your friend thinks, "My friend won't come if I marry on Sunday," would your friend hold the wedding on Sunday? “Though my marriage is on Sunday, my friend will attend my wedding.” That is why they hold wedding ceremony on Sunday. Because you thoughtlessly and easily say yes to attend your friend’s wedding on Sunday, God’s name is tarnished and your life is getting messed up. Jehoshaphat disobeyed God. He made a unholy alliance with ungodly man. Then he nearly died.

For alliance, Jehoshaphat let his son, Jehoram marry Athaliah, a daughter of Ahab. This marriage absolutely displeased God. Later, Jehoram’s on, Ahaziah was killed by Jehu. Afterward, all of Jehoshaphat's grandsons were killed by Ahab's daughter, Athaliah. Because of Jehoshaphat's humanistic decision, he was dishonored and all his children and grandchildren were wiped out. Friendship is precious and important. However, learn a lesson from Jehoshaphat's failure.

Ahab ignored Micaiah’s warning. Then what did he do? Look at verse 30. “I will enter the battle in disguise.” Ahab uses a trick that is disguise. “I would not die because I am disguised.” Clearly, the will of God was delivered to Ahab, “Ahab, stop! Or you will die.” However, sin is like a uncontrollable and unstoppable bulldozer. Ahab’s ego self-seeking did not stop him.
Folks, you must stop. God stopped working on the seventh day after creating all things for six days. God made the seventh day holy saying to man. “Stop and come to me and have rest.” This is God’s design for man. You have to stop to worship God. Yes, worship is a pause. You stop working, studying, travelling and come to God to have rest and be renewed. If you do not stop but continue to work to make money or study for your career ignoring God and his law, you are like a car with broken brakes, going downhill.

Verse 34 says, “But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the sections of his armor.” Ahab thought he was safe because he was disguised and wore an arrow-proof armor. But there was a undefended spot on Ahab body. An arrow randomly shot exactly penetrated that spot and Ahab died from excessive bleeding.

Ahab-like people boast or comfort themselves, “I'm disguised. I'm wearing an arrow-proof armor. I have a degree, I have a good job. I have a good saving. I have good friends. Nothing will harm me. I am safe.” But they do not know or they ignore the truth that there are still undefended spots in their bodies and their armors.

Folks, prepare all you want. Go ahead and prepare forever. Study all night, work out at the gym, eat healthy food, save money and make friends who would offer you a job. Could any of them protect you give you security, yes eternal security? It all fall aparts in a blow. We are safe only under the protection of God.
As God prophesied, Ahab died. Dogs literally licked his blood, in the well where prostitutes bathed. This means Ahab was worse than prostitutes.

Folks, don’t live by disguising yourself or wearing armor. Instead, come to God, listen to His voice through God’s servants. And don’t stick to your plan if it is not God-pleasing. And obey God.

There are many Ahab in this world. They hear truthful word of God from Micaiah like pastors. They have friends like Jehoshaphat. But they still live according to their plan and stubbornly insist it. They should stop, but they say they have to go to take Romas Giliad, studying hard, making money, traveling with friends or keeping ungodly relationship. For whom are they doing that? For the dogs? If we live like Ahab, no matter how thoroughly we prepare, we'll die from an arrow shot randomly.
Can you protect yourself? Do you think your career or friendship or saving money or health can protect yourselves? The Lord, the Lord of life must protect you and me. I want you to live a life of obeying God.

Ahab was on a roll. He worshipped Baal, a god of fertility and became very wealthy that he built his palace out of ivory. He left his children a lot of money. However, his son Ahaziah died so vainly within two years. Why? Because his parents Ahab and Jezebel left him the worst path. What do you want to leave to your children and your descendants? A house and money? Verse 52 says, “He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, because he followed the ways of his father and mother and of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin.” Don’t follow Ahab’s path. Instead, follow Jesus’ path, his cross and resurrection, prayer, mission, devotion and serving life. Jesus is the way. And leave your children the way of Jesus. Then you and your children will live forever.
